P’ansori, a traditional Korean genre of musical storytelling, is a representative cultural property recognized by the government and UNESCO. Still, p’ansori in translation has not received sound scholarly treatment. Against this backdrop, the present study analyzes Marshall R. Pihl’s translation of “Sim Ch’ŏng ka” (The Song of Shim Ch’ŏng) and discusses how p’ansori can be enriched in English translation. The Song of Shim Ch’ŏng, the first annotated English translation of a full p’ansori performance text, is in the eighth chapter of The Korean Singer of Tales (1994), Pihl’s seminal book on p’ansori. This translation and related peritexts are examined in the following areas: (1) the title and layout, (2) lexical features, (3) syntactic incompleteness, (4) punctuation marks and italics, and (5) the translator’s notes and index. The study concludes with a brief discussion of how p’ansori translation/translators should be like.
